What Are Native Cigarettes? Why Are They So Much Cheaper?
Native cigarettes are tobacco products manufactured on First Nations territory in Canada. Under Indigenous rights frameworks, these businesses operate outside the provincial tobacco tax system — which is what makes the price difference so dramatic.
When you buy cigarettes at a Canadian convenience store, more than $80 of the price you pay is tax: federal excise duty, provincial tobacco tax, and HST stacked on top of each other. Native cigarettes produced on-territory are exempt from provincial tobacco taxes. Those savings go directly to you.
